With no military flights scheduled, they suspect a downed civilian aircraft and venture into the forest to investigate.

As they drive into the dense woods, they encounter another strange sight: a moving white light approaching them on the forest path. Concerned about a potential security breach, they return to the east gate to report what they've seen. Burroughs contacts Sergeant Crash McCabe, who initially dismisses the report as a Christmas prank. However, after speaking with Steffens, McCabe realizes the seriousness of the situation and alerts central security control.

Flight Chief Sergeant James Penniston is ordered to investigate. He and his fellow airman Edward Cabinsag, along with Burroughs, head into the forest. They encounter a mesmerizing display of lights – blue, red, white, and yellow – a spectacle far beyond anything they've ever seen. Their radios begin to malfunction, the air crackles with static electricity, and an eerie sensation washes over them, as if they were wading through deep water.

As Penniston and Burroughs press on, they witness a blinding flash of light that forces them to the ground. When Penniston rises, he sees Burroughs seemingly engulfed in light. And when the light dissipates, Penniston is confronted with an unbelievable sight: a triangular, three-meter high metallic craft perched on slender legs. It's silent, emitting a bright light from the top, and adorned with strange symbols etched into its surface – symbols that resemble ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Drawn to the craft, Penniston approaches cautiously. The surface is smooth, almost like glass, devoid of seams or imperfections. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Holt arrives to find the incident documented in the law enforcement and security blotters, as well as an official Air Force report. Concerned about the implications of the term "UFO," Holt suggests using the more neutral phrase "unexplained lights." But the intrigue thickens when the blotters mysteriously disappear. Staff Sergeant Coffey recalls Base Commander Ted Conrad classifying his blotter as secret.

Later that night, more strange lights are reported, this time by personnel from D-Flight. One group, including Lieutenant Bonnie Tamplin, experiences a near-power outage when their jeep is struck by an intense light beam. The events of this night, and the following days, are captured on tape, with recordings of radio chatter and memos made by Lt. Col. Holt, adding another layer to this perplexing case. These tapes, especially the so-called "HALT tape," are a cornerstone of the Rendlesham narrative and continue to be studied and debated today, containing cryptic recordings of Holt's observations: "There is no doubt about it. There's some type of strange flashing red light at here… This is weird. There's something very, very strange… Bits of it are falling off it again. But it just moved to the right. Penniston's encounter takes another turn years later. He reveals that after touching the craft, he experienced a flash of binary code in his mind.
